Affected by decreased orders from Motorola, Taiwan's shipments of general handsets (excluding smartphones) totaled 18.29 million units in the second quarter of this year, down 6.4% on quarter and also down 4.1% on year, the Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) quoted data from the Market Intelligence Center (MIC) as reporting.
The paper quoted MIC's projection as saying that shipments of general handsets from Taiwan makers will top 21.8 and 22 million in the third and fourth quarters, down 13% and 19%, respectively, from the same periods of 2007.
However, Taiwan's shipments of smartphones rose 13.1% on year to 7.16 million units in the second quarter due largely to shipments of 3G iPhones from Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), the paper quoted MIC data as indicating. Shipments of smartphones will continue its momentum in the second half of 2008, buoyed by shipments of the HTC Touch Diamond handsets from HTC and expanding shipments of 3G iPhones, the paper added.
