Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), the largest telecom services provider in Taiwan, on July 14 launched an aggressive pricing strategy to further promote its 3G services.
In order to boost the number of its 3G subscribers, CHT will double the amount of subsidiary to a range between NT$7,000-13,000 (US$230-428) compared to the previous range of NT$4,000-8,000 for contract subscribers to pick up a 3G handset at CHT.
CHT aims to boost the number of its 3G subscribers to 3.3 million by the end of this year, from the three million subscribers it currently has, according to information provided by CHT.
CHT sold 720,000 3G handsets in 2007, accounting for 40% of the total handsets it sold in the year. The company has sold 1.1 million handsets in the first half of 2008, with 3G models accounting for 900,000 units.
Including 2G services, CHT currently has a total of 8.75 million mobile subscribers, said the company, which has also projected to sell 2.2 million handsets in 2008.
