China Mobile holding second round TD-SCDMA bid

China Mobile has launched a second round bid for TD-SCDMA wireless network equipment which has attracted the attention of many China-based and international companies. Nokia Siemens Networks and its partner Huawei Technologies will both join the bid, according to industry sources.

The sources indicated that China Mobile is planning to purchase 23,000 base stations for 28 cities with a budget in the tens of billion RMB range (10 billion RMB is equivalent to US$1.46 billion). The network is expected to enter commercial operation in mid 2009, and when the time comes, TS-SCDMA will cover 38 major cities in China.

Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Nokia Siemens and China-based companies Huawei, Datang Mobile and ZTE are aggressively preparing for the bid. Nokia Siemens has specially expanded its TD-SCDMA group to 1,200 staff, the sources added.

Although Nokia Siemens and Huawei have a joint venture, TD Tech, for developing TD-SCDMA technology, these two companies will join the bidding independently, with TD Tech acting as supplier in the event of a win.

ZTE, Datang Mobile and TD Tech submitted winning tenders for China Mobile's first round TD-SCDMA bid in March last year. ZTE is working with Ericsson and Datang Mobile is partnered with Alcatel-Lucent.
