Advice on LBS applications, compliments of NAVTEQ
NN4D has provided overviews of four key documents to help you get started creating LBS applications. Please note, access to the download links below requires membership of NN4D, which is free to join.

Introduction to Map Compilation
Map Compilation is the process whereby a navigable digital map, such as that licensed by NAVTEQ, is reformatted for optimal use in an application. In the case of transmitting the map over a limited bandwidth or costly connection, compression and partitioning into small chunks is the primary concern. For use in an affordable, pocketable, consumer device, both compression and run-time performance enhancing transformations and indexing are required. In the case of use on a server, run time performance is paramount and therefore transformations, re-organizations and indexing of the data are required. Download>>

Introduction to Map Display
Map Display is the software component that takes a digital map database, such as found in the NAVTEQ product line, and renders it into a picture for use in a navigation system, LBS service, web site, etc. Authored by Marcus Jenkins, NAVTEQ Principal Consultant, this article takes you through the basics of Cartography (Scale, Projections, Map Generalization) and gives you tips on achieving that 'paper map feel'. Intro to Route Calculation
Route calculation is the software component in a navigation system that determines the best route between two places according to the user's preferences, traffic conditions, etc. It is a computation-intensive process that processes large amounts of data in order to determine the best route. This introductory white paper provides an overview on route calculation algorithms, inputs, outputs, and other concepts. Download>>
