Taiwan market: CHT unveils own-brand Android-powered smartphone

Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) has unveiled an own-brand Android-powered smartphone, the CHT 8000, which will be available in the Taiwan market in mid-December, and the company aims to ship 30,000 units of the Android phone, made by China-based Huawei Technologies, within one year.

CHT plans to launch one or two more own-brand Android phones in the coming year and expects combined sales of own-brand and other brands, mainly HTC-branded, of Android-based smartphones to reach 120,000 units in 2010, the company said.

In addition, sales of Windows Mobile- and Symbian-based smartphones as well as iPhones will total 180,000 units in 2010, the company projected. The carrier also plans to launch an Android applications store in 2010 as Google has not yet made its Android Market available to mobile phone users in Taiwan, the company indicated.
