Orange is proud to announce Adam Deacon as the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award winner in 2012.
The Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award is the only award presented at the Orange British Academy Film Awards that is voted for by the public. Adam is one of five international actors nominated for their exceptional talent and recognised as a true star in the making. The other nominees are: Chris Hemsworth, Chris O’Dowd, Eddie Redmayne and Tom Hiddleston.
Born and raised in Hackney, East London, Adam rose to fame after starring in 2006 film Kidulthood and has been playing urban and streetwise characters since the age of 12. He reprised the role of Jay in Adulthood, the sequel to Kidulthood, as well as starring in crime thriller 4.3.2.1. In 2012, he is due to appear in three films; Outside Bet (alongside Bob Hoskins), thriller Payback Season and Menhaj Huda’s Comedown.
Spencer McHugh, Director of Brand at Orange, said: “We’re thrilled that the British public has chosen Adam as their winner. The build-up to the award has been one of our most exciting yet and the passionate support for the nominees from their fans on Twitter and Facebook has demonstrated this truly is the public’s award. We’d like to congratulate Adam and hope this marks the start of a new exciting chapter in his career.”
Pippa Harris, Deputy Chair of BAFTA’s Film Committee and Chair of the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star jury, added: “The nominees represent some of the most exciting performers in cinema right now. I can’t wait to see what Adam and they do next.”
The Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award was created in honour of Mary Selway, the highly respected BAFTA-winning casting director whose career spanned three decades and over ninety films before she died in 2004. She worked with notable directors such as Steven Spielberg, Roman Polanski, Clint Eastwood and Ridley Scott, contributing to the creation of some of the silver screen's most memorable characters.
Initially a longlist of eight actors and actresses were selected by a jury of respected members of the film industry including Harry Potter director David Yates, Jury Chair Pippa Harris and actors Simon Pegg and Sienna Miller. Orange customers voted for their top five to produce the nominees, and the British public voted for the winner via the Orange website www.orange.co.uk/bafta and by text.
