Nokia Siemens Networks brings TD-LTE to Spain
Pairs with Consortium of Advanced Telecommunications (COTA) & Wimax Online on country’s first TD-LTE service, in 2.6GHz band
Nokia Siemens Networks, has provided the solution to successfully complete the first 4G mobile broadband pilot with TD-LTE technology in Murcia, Spain, ahead of a November launch for commercial services. COTA, a new player in Spanish telecoms, working with Wimax Online, selected Nokia Siemens Networks as sole supplier for a customer-focused end-to-end LTE service. The operator plans to launch commercial mobile broadband Internet access service using Nokia Siemens Networks TD-LTE technology by the end of the year.
The implementation, in the autonomous “Región de Murcia”, is Southern Europe’s first TD-LTE, 2.6 GHz network.
Services from regional operators make the Spanish market highly diverse. COTA, in collaboration with Wimax Online, is an example of a local operator with a flexible and efficient business model. COTA acquired 10 MHz in the 2.6 GHz band auction in the summer of 2011 and immediately began to plan for a service launch. Wimax Online will benefit from the wholesale LTE access provided by COTA. In addition to extending the existing service portfolio with broadband offering, they will provide DSL-like services in the Murcia region where it is currently not possible to provide fixed-internet connectivity and VoIP. COTA also plans to provide television services through an IPTV-platform in the future.
The deployment marks the first Single Radio Access Network (RAN) TD-LTE project in South Europe, the first Band 38 TD-LTE deployment in Spain, and one of the first 4G networks in South Europe. Using advanced TDD/FDD, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) techniques and Single RAN TD-LTE is the most cost-effective solution for the acquired band.
The end-to-end TD-LTE service is based on Nokia Siemens Networks’ energy-efficient Flexi Multiradio Base Station technology together with existing TD-LTE customer premises equipment (similar to WiFi routers), the CPE indoor 7212 and CPE outdoor 7210. In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks’ partner Athonet provided core network components for COTA. The agreement also included Nokia Siemens Networks’ professional services.

MTS, Nokia Siemens Networks launch Russia’s first #TD-LTE #4G network
Liquid Net elements to help provide 4G services for 96% of Moscow territory by end of 2012
Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has launched ultra-fast 4G mobile broadband services with speeds of up to 100 Mbps (megabits per second) in most of Moscow and 40 population centers in Moscow regions. Nokia Siemens Networks is the sole vendor for the launch, providing a complete Time Division Duplex Long Term Evolution (TD-LTE)* network and a range of comprehensive services. As part of the network, the company has provided its Single Radio Access Network (RAN) and Liquid Core based Evolved Packet Core (EPC).
“The launch of LTE services by MTS, on a par with leading LTE services around the world, reaffirms Russia's place among most technologically advanced economies. Our LTE network's high data throughput and superior reliability enable our customers to benefit from high quality multimedia applications with faster network access,” said Konstantin Markov, head of MTS macro-region, Moscow. "MTS is expanding mobile broadband services in Moscow, contributing to the region's development. Joint efforts by MTS and Nokia Siemens Networks, our long-standing partner, are focused on achieving LTE coverage in 96% of Moscow by the end of 2012. We also plan to double the coverage in Moscow provinces from the current level of coverage in 40 towns.”
“This TD-LTE network rollout, one of the largest TD-LTE networks in the world, is yet another example of our commitment to promote 4G technology globally,” said Vladimir Ulianov, head of MTS customer team at Nokia Siemens Networks. “To significantly enhance the mobile broadband experience for MTS customers, we applied our expertise in TD-LTE technology and strong services capabilities. Our radio and core network elements have built a reliable and flexible network to fulfill current and future data traffic demands driven by the drastically increasing use of smartphones.”
Under the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks has provided its Single RAN platform, based on its compact, energy-efficient Flexi Multiradio Base Station for the TD-LTE network. The company has migrated MTS’ complete network from WiMAX, deploying 2,200 advanced, multi-technology base stations from its mobile broadband offering. Nokia Siemens Networks has also provided its Liquid Core** based Evolved Packet Core (EPC) platform, including Flexi Network Server (NS) and Flexi Network Gateway (NG).
As part of the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks has provided its NetAct network management system to provide consolidated configuration, monitoring and network optimization. In addition, the company has provided its New Technology Home Location Register (NT-HLR)*** and Home Subscriber Server (HSS)****.
Nokia Siemens Networks has ensured a smooth rollout of the 4G network by providing network planning and optimization services for 4G and 2G/3G quality assurance, full turnkey solutions including site acquisition, project management, customer logistics, construction works and network implementation. Nokia Siemens Networks has also provided an end-to-end security solution for Packet Core and LTE Transport, including firewalls, a Certificate Authority and security gateways.

Flexi Zone solution from Nokia Siemens Networks awarded for innovation
Organization of Small Cell Forum commended the innovative design and technological solution of the concept of small cells, created by an expert in the field of mobile broadband
The company Nokia Siemens Networks has received the highest award of Small Cell Industry Awards 2012 in the category "Design of network elements for small cells, and technological innovation." Organization of Small Cell Forum noted the complex created by Flexi Zone * for the use of innovative concepts Hot Zone. Nokia Siemens Networks supports Optus network modernization and 4G implementation
To modernize Optus’ mobile network including refarming the 900 MHz GSM frequency band to improve UMTS 3G coverage
To implement Evolved Packet Core and rollout parts of 4G LTE 1800 MHz radio access network
Optus, one of the leading mobile operators in Australia, has selected Nokia Siemens Networks as a partner for its key network initiatives. The agreement includes modernization of the mobile network, refarming the 900 MHz GSM frequency band, and providing infrastructure and services for LTE* (4G) rollout in Sydney and Perth. In addition, as part of this agreement, Nokia Siemens Networks is the sole LTE core provider for Optus.
“Spectrum is a scarce resource, so operators are seeking ways to make the best use of it. With this deal, Optus will re-use its existing spectrum to modernize its radio network and also offer 4G services cost-efficiently in one of the largest spectrum migration programs globally,” said Stephen McFeeley, head of Australia and New Zealand at Nokia Siemens Networks. “Our mobile broadband offering, based on the Liquid Core and Liquid Radio architectures, will assist Optus in managing the dynamic capacity and technology demands in one of the most advanced mobile broadband markets.”
“Our major mobile network initiatives, including network enhancements, U900 MHz spectrum migration program and 4G services rollout aim to provide the best possible experience for our customers,” added Günther Ottendorfer, Managing Director, Networks at Optus. “Nokia Siemens Networks is a key network partner in supporting these initiatives.”
Nokia Siemens Networks is upgrading the Optus mobile network and deploying 4G using its Single RAN (radio access network)** platform, based on its compact, energy-efficient Flexi Multiradio Base Station. The company is also providing its Evolved Packet Core platform including Flexi NS (Network Server) and Flexi NG (Network Gateway). Optus’ LTE, GSM and 3G networks will be monitored, managed and optimized by Nokia Siemens Networks’ unified network management system, NetAct.
In addition to Optus’ in-house services capability, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide Optus with a range of services, including network implementation, spectrum refarming, radio planning, optimization, project management, and care including spare part management, software maintenance, third-party software support and training. Some of these services will be delivered remotely through Nokia Siemens Networks' Global Delivery Centers. Nokia Siemens Networks will also implement its In Building Solution (IBS) that enables reliable mobile broadband connectivity by significantly improving network capacity and coverage inside buildings.
The company will provide reliable and secure 4G services over the network through its radio transport security solution. Nokia Siemens Networks will also provide network operations support to improve Optus' network efficiency and quality.
