Smartphones continue to spur FPCB maker sales in 4Q08

Flexible PCB (FPCB) specialist Career Technology is expected to enjoy revenues growth of 20-25% sequentially in the fourth quarter of 2008, buoyed by increasing orders from smartphone manufacturers, according to company sources. Handset applications account for more than 60% of Career Technology's overall FPCB output at present.

Career Technology mainly supplies smartphone-use FPCBs to High Tech Computer (HTC), Research In Motion (RIM) and Apple, according to industry watchers. The Taiwan-based PCB maker declined to comment on customer details, but responded that growing demand for multi-functional handheld devices has encouraged the company's revenues from the FPCB business.

Career Technology posted after-tax profits of NT$87 million (US$2.62 million) in the third quarter, with gross margins growing to 20.57%. Continuously-improved utilization rates have narrowed the company's accumulated losses to NT$79 million for the past three quarters. The PCB player suffered combined losses of NT$188.76 million in the first half of 2008.
