Taiwan handset makers may land orders from new OHA members

Following the Google spawned Open Handset Alliance's (OHA's) announcement that an additional 14 new members have joined the group, Taiwan-based handset makers are expected to land more orders, according to sources at handset makers.

Of the 14 new members, handset vendors including Sony Ericsson and Garmin International already have partnerships with Taiwan makers, therefore it is likely the vendors' Android-based handset orders will also be outsourced to these partners.

Asustek Computer is expected to work with Garmin, while High Tech Computer (HTC) will have a chance to work with Sony Ericsson since both makers already have Android platform experience.

Other vendors such as Huawei Technologies are likely to outsource orders to China-based makers, although Huawei also has partners in Taiwan, while Toshiba is likely to perform all its design work in-house, noted the sources.

OHA recently announced the new membership of 14 companies: AKM Semiconductor, ARM, Asustek Computer, Atheros Communications, Borqs, Ericsson, Garmin International, Huawei Technologies, Omron Software, Softbank Mobile, Sony Ericsson, Teleca AB, Toshiba and Vodafone.
