Intel says no plans to develop chipset solutions for WiMAX CPE products

Intel currently has no plans to step into the development of chipset solutions for WiMAX CPE (customer premise equipment) products, but will focus on solutions for WiMAX modules used in notebooks and netbooks, Lil Mohan, managing director of Intel's WiMAX program, said during a recent 4G mobile technology forum held in Taipei.

With regards to data transmission over WiMAX networks, Mohan said that he believes the evolution of WiMAX technology will allow it outperform 3G technology over 10-fold in the future compared to the current gap of just two- to three-fold.

A total of 308 WiMAX networks in 118 countries around the globe have either begun construction or kicked off commercial operations, according to Mohan, who added that the number of WiMAX POPs (point of presences) will top 650 million worldwide by 2010.
