AT&T Delivers More 3G Coverage for South Florida Customers

3G Technology Added to More Than 35 Cell Sites, Including Sites at Key Shopping and Sporting Venues.

Whether you’re shopping at one of South Florida’s large malls, attending a Panthers game or visiting the Miami Convention Center, AT&T* has you covered. AT&T today announced it has added third-generation (3G) technology to more than 35 South Florida cell sites since the start of the year. This month alone AT&T added 3G to sites in the Dadeland Mall, Aventura Mall, Broward Mall, Pembroke Lakes Mall, Boynton Beach Mall, Gardens Mall, Panthers Arena//BankAtlantic Center, American Airlines Arena and the Miami Convention Center. AT&T’s 3G service allows customers to take advantage of high-speed services and cutting-edge devices like smartphones and netbooks.

Since January, AT&T has expanded 3G coverage in the areas of: Islamorada in Monroe County; Florida City, Miami, Doral, Medley, and Miami Beach in Miami-Dade County; Pembroke Pines, Fort Lauderdale, Plantation, Sunrise, Hillsboro Mile, and Parkland in Broward County; Boynton Beach, Wellington, Loxahatchee, South Bay, Pahokee, and Canal Point in Palm Beach County; Port Mayaca and Indiantown in Martin County; White City and Fort Pierce in St. Lucie County; Okeechobee in Okeechobee County; and Vero Beach in Indian River County.

In addition to boosting 3G coverage, AT&T has substantially increased capacity on its South Florida 3G wireless network from as far south as Key Biscayne to as far north as Sunrise. The project involved the addition of a third layer of capacity, or “third carrier,” to the AT&T 3G network – the first UMTS network upgrade of its kind to be completed by a wireless provider in the U.S. The additional capacity is targeted to support higher volumes of mobile broadband traffic. AT&T plans to make the same upgrade in more areas of South Florida before year’s end to support the growing demand for 3G mobile broadband service.

“Our goal is to add 3G service in new areas throughout South Florida with a special focus on improving in-building coverage while adding network capacity where we already have this technology in place,” said Rich Guidotti, vice president and general manager, AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets for South Florida. “We continually upgrade our network so that our customers have the best experience every time they make a call, check an e-mail or surf the Internet on their AT&T device.”

From 2006 to 2008, AT&T’s total capital investment in its wireless and wireline networks in Florida was more than $3 billion. In 2009, AT&T plans to invest between $17 billion and $18 billion to enhance its entire wired and wireless networks.

“The investment we’re making in our Florida 3G wireless broadband network is part of our ongoing effort to build the broadband networks – both wireless and wired - that will create jobs, fuel economic growth and allow customers to access the content, applications and services that matter most to them,” said Marshall Criser, lll, AT&T president, Florida.

AT&T’s 3G network is now available in more than 350 U.S. major metropolitan areas. AT&T plans to upgrade its 3G network with HSPA 7.2 technology to deliver even faster mobile broadband speeds. The deployment will begin in six major U.S. cities, including Miami, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and Los Angeles, with initial service availability expected in these markets by the end of the year. All told, AT&T plans to deploy HSPA 7.2 in 25 of the nation’s 30 largest markets by the end of 2010, and to reach about 90 percent of its existing 3G network footprint with HSPA 7.2 by the end of 2011.
