Nokia soliciting RFI for ODM production of Maemo-based smartphones, says paper

Aiming to fend off increasing competition from rival vendors in the smartphone segment, Nokia has reportedly released RFI (request for information) requirements on ODM production of Maemo-based smartphones from Taiwan handset makers, including Compal Communications and Chi Mei Communication Systems (CMCS), according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report.

The move indicates that Nokia is, for the first time, considering releasing its smartphone orders to ODM makers, said the paper, adding that the handset vendor cut its R&D staff in 2008.
