Pegatron lands large-volume smartbook orders

Pegatron Technology has received a large volume of orders for smartbooks from a number of clients, which are likely to launch in cooperation with telecom carriers in the first quarter of 2010, according to company general manager of business unit one, Jeremy Shu.

Shu pointed out that smartbooks have advantages over netbooks such as longer usage time, short boot-up time, friendly user interfaces, unique industrial designs and lower costs. Since the devices use less components and do not require licensing fees for the operating system, makers can significantly reduce their costs and offer more competitive retail prices.

Shu noted that smartbooks set for launch in the first quarter of 2010 may hit a US$200 price point and will mainly adopt a desktop Linux distribution since Android still has limits in regards to display resolutions. Google Chrome OS-based smartbooks are expected to be available on a large scale in the second half of 2010, Shu added.

Other makers, including Foxconn Electronics, Compal Electronics and Inventec, as well as component supplier Nvidia are also expected to benefit from rising demand for smartbooks, according to industry sources.
