The top-three Taiwan-based telecom carriers Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) and Taiwan Mobile are all eager to offer e-book services in order to help boost their ARPU (average revenue per user), according to industry sources.
FET has been the most aggressive operator planning to launch an e-book reading platform by the end of November enabling clients to reach its e-book store via PC systems or handsets before it launches its own-brand e-book readers in the first quarter of 2010, according to the company.
On the other hand, CHT began to offer its e-book service in October and claims daily downloads of 10,000-20,000 currently.
CHT said it has decided not to offer e-book readers at present due to high prices.
Taiwan Mobile will launch an e-book service via handsets by the end of 2009, the company said.
