Johan Wibergh: network evolution essential to seamless broadband experience

With the first steps towards the Networked Society already behind us, Johan Wibergh, the Head of Ericsson’s Business Unit Networks, has a simple message for operators hoping to capitalize on the dramatic changes in how, when and where we access information: evolve your network if you want to remain profitable.

The huge growth in intelligent mobile devices such as smartphones and pads, and the emergence of the cloud, are two factors behind major changes in the internet. The result is increasing user demands for high quality, seamless broadband experiences, across fixed and mobile, and the emergence of a new user – the cloud user.

Wibergh says the answer lies in applying IP technology to both fixed and mobile broadband in the fourth generation of IP networking.

"Operators need to evolve their networks to stay profitable," Wibergh says. "It is really about quickly changing the architecture to cope with the rapid growth of mobile broadband as well as converging it with the fixed side.

"Operators need to manage the rapid growth in video traffic. To do that you need to deploy the latest technologies … but (it is) also about introducing what we call a smartpipe – differentiating the traffic that goes through the network."

Wibergh outlines the technologies and solutions available to operators, from "IPfying" networks; optimizing performance between smart devices, the cloud and connectivity; deploying more spectrum-effective technologies such as HSPA+ and LTE; bringing together EDGE routers on the fixed and mobile side to a combined Metro-EDGE layer to really have an effective transmission path.
