Apple CEO Tim Cook sent a letter to all employees of Apple as follows:
Team, I have very sad news that I would like to share with you all. This morning, Steve died.
The company Apple, like the rest of the world has lost a wise, creative genius and amazing man. Those of us who were fortunate to know and work with Steve lost a dear friend and inspiring mentor. Steve is survived by his company, which only they could build, and his spirit will forever remain the basis of Apple.

No words can adequately express my sorrow at the death of Steve and our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continue the work he loved so much.
