Motorola Mobility Foundation Empowers Communities with Second Annual Grant Program

Paper or plastic? Whether to pay with cash or credit is a simple decision many of us take for granted in the checkout line. Now, with an Empowerment Grant from the Motorola Mobility Foundation, Just Harvest will develop a mobile app enabling Pittsburgh-area farmers markets to process credit cards and food stamps in the checkout line - making local, healthy food accessible to everyone in the community regardless of income.

And thanks to funding from the Motorola Mobility Foundation, Horizons for the Blind will make it possible for consumers who are visually impaired to access nutritional information and cooking instructions on food packaging labels on-the-go by using a mobile scanning app, revolutionizing their shopping experience.

This year, the Motorola Mobility Foundation awarded Empowerment Grants to 42 U.S. based non-profit organizations to support the development of mobile technology programs to enrich the communities they serve. Empowerment Grant recipients engage in a wide variety of outreach activities, ranging from technology-literacy education and app boot camps to collecting data for research projects to peer mentoring for students through the use of technology. The grant program addressed four areas of focus: education, health and wellness, community and arts and culture.
