Chunghwa Telecom to provide unparalleled mobile broadband user experience in its 3G network

Nokia Siemens Networks to increase network capacity, help Chunghwa Telecom move towards a flat all-IP architecture

Chunghwa Telecom, the largest telecommunications operator in Taiwan will increase the capacity of its 3G network to significantly improve transmission speeds and expand coverage. The € 72 million contract encompasses the latest technology and services from Nokia Siemens Networks to facilitate speeds of up to 2 Mbps in the uplink and 14 Mbps in the downlink.

This upgrade is in line with Chunghwa’s overall strategy of providing an unparalleled mobile broadband experience that can deliver better browsing, higher resolution on streamed mobile content and improved interactivity.

Chunghwa Telecom will trial Nokia Siemens Networks’ Internet High Speed Access (I-HSPA) network. The trial, which marks the first such initiative in the Asia-Pacific region, will pave the way for a smooth migration to an flat all-IP architecture that is not only faster, but also more cost-effective to deploy and operate.

Nokia Siemens Networks will deploy its Flexi Base Station and mobile softswitching solutions, along with a high capacity/connectivity RNC and packet core solution, including CombiSGSN and FlexiISN, to boost the overall High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) performance of the network. Market leader in energy efficiency, the Flexi Base Station solution will specifically help keep Chunghwa Telecom’s network capital and operating expenditures in check while providing an environmentally friendly base station solution.

In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks will continue to rollout its IP backhaul solution, to further reduce traditional transmission costs. With deliveries starting immediately, the project, which includes network implementation and design, optimization, systems integration and maintenance services, will be completed by July 2009. These services will help Chunghwa Telecom to minimize the required network capital expenditure, as full potential of the products will be achieved to maximize the network efficiency and quality.

Jen-Hon Lin, President, Chunghwa Telecom Mobile Business Group says, “Taiwan is a pioneer in cutting edge technology deployments and has even emerged as the region’s hotbed for high speed data services. Against such a backdrop, what we are doing with Nokia Siemens Networks is even more ground breaking. With their time-to-market HSPA suite of products and exceptional service delivery, we have never needed to look elsewhere.”

The Head of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Subregion, Nokia Siemens Networks, Mike Wang adds, “Our relationship with Chunghwa Telecom is one that is built on mutual trust. They have turned to us on numerous occasions to boost their high speed packet data traffic to keep ahead of the market and we in turn have time and again delivered cutting edge technology that sets them apart. The I-HSPA trial is just one more example of their innovative spirit in exploring solutions that can deliver the best value for money and for the environment. We are honoured to partner them in this trial – a first across Greater China and Asia Pacific.”
