Huawei Delivers to Telefónica the First 40G Nodes for its Transmission Network in Spain

[Shenzhen, China, 17 November 2008] Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. ("Huawei"), a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, today announced that Huawei has delivered to Telefónica de España the first 40G nodes for its transmission network. Huawei has provided its leading 40G transmission solution to help Telefónica de España successfully deploy its first 40G channels worldwide. The already deployed WDM optical rings allow for high-bandwidth transmission, more flexible dispatch and intelligent transmission.

The rapid growth of data traffic has made it necessary to increase the per channel capacity of transport networks up to 40G. Telefónica de España decided to construct a 40G intelligent network in order to improve the reliability and capacity of its network and to reduce its operational costs by improving its provisioning and network running capabilities.

Huawei' s solution uses advanced technologies such as ROADM (Reconfigurable Optical Add-drop Multiplexer), which guarantees flexible provisioning, and is ready to activate advanced network Control and Management Planes based on GMPLS (Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching).

"We are pleased to have had the privilege of working with Telefónica de España for several years," said Christian Chua, president of Huawei Transport Network Product Line. "It is also a great honor for us to provide the operator with its first 40G optical structures providing it with flexible and reliable intelligent transmission solutions."

Huawei's 40G transmission solution has been widely recognized in the industry winning an InfoVision Award from the International Engineering Consortium (IEC) in 2008. Huawei has also deployed the industry's longest 40G commercial trunk with no electric regeneration and has announced the successful development of a 100G WDM prototype.
