Taiwan market: Taiwan Mobile launches HTC Touch HD to compete with iPhone 3G

Taiwan-based telecom carrier Taiwan Mobile on December 12 launched the HTC Touch HD handset from High Tech Computer (HTC) in the Taiwan market, just prior to the official debut of iPhone 3G by rival Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) slated for December 13.

While CHT will subsidize the cost of the iPhone, up to the whole cost of an 8GB model if customers sign a two-year 3G voice and data service contract at a rate of NT$2,549 (US$76.50) per month, while Taiwan mobile said that it will offer the HTC Touch HD with a 8GB memory card for free when customers sign a two-year contract at NT$2,490 a month.

The price of an HTC Touch HD with 8GB memory card is set at NT$25,900 when bought without a contract or with a pay-as-you-go service, while the 8GB iPhone 3G is available for NT$26,600. It is believed that all iPhones sold in Taiwan will be locked to CHT's network, although this is yet to be confirmed.

In other news, CHT said that it has received over 10,000 pre-sales orders for the iPhone 3G since online sign up began just 11 days ago.

Sources at CHT said that the company expects to sell 2,500 iPhone 3Gs in Taipei and 700 units in Kaohsiung on the first day of launch when the handset makes its debut on December 13. CHT's iPhone 3G launch campaign budget is NT$20 million, the sources added.
