Telecom carrier CHT to migrate into ICT segment

Taiwan-based Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) has decided to migrate into the information and communications technology (ICT) segment leveraging the carrier's information and telecom infrastructure, according to company chairman Shyue-ching Lu.

CHT will focus on a number of newly emerging industries, including green energy, biotechnology, medical card, tourism, refined agricultural and cultural innovation industry, Lu noted.

Take the refined agricultural industry for example, CHT boasts near infrared (NIR) technology that can develop NIR devices for checking the quality and sugar levels of fruits, said Lu, noting that CHT is expected to roll out commercial NIR devices in the next 6-12 months.

CHT will venture into those emerging industries through the operations of business platforms or technological cooperation with existing players, Lu noted.

However, CHT has not yet decided the amount of capital that it may funnel into the target industries.
