Acer chairman calls for cross-strait cooperation on WiMAX, e-book readers

Acer chairman JT Wang, who also serves as chairman of the Taipei Computer Association (TCA), has invited China-based players to attend Computex 2010 and hopes participation could further expand Taiwan players' cooperation with China players over WiMAX products and e-book readers.

Wang said that Taiwan's WiMAX and China's TD/LTE communication standards share a very similar structure and therefore there should be much closer partnerships. However, since only about 15 China players have established offices in Taiwan for the communications segment, as of the end of October, Wang urged players to speed up cooperation in the future.

As for whether Acer will enter the e-book reader market, Wang only commented that the company is still watching and waiting for the right time to enter.

Although Wang did not detail any cooperation between China and Taiwan over e-book readers, industry sources believe that since China and Taiwan shared a similar language, while Taiwan has strong hardware and software technology and China has a large potential readership, the two markets will be able to complement each other without language barriers.
