Google Maps Navigation may impact PND vendors

Google's recent release of Google Maps Navigation for Android 2.0-platform devices may impact GPS PND vendors such as Garmin and TomTom as well as other handset makers, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

Although the Google Maps Navigation service is currently only available in the US, expansion to other markets in 2010 may also affect sales of Nokia's GPS-enabled handsets and its navigation service, the sources added.

In order to sustain market share, branded PND players and white-box vendors may offer entry-level models with a price tag of US$69 and US$49, respectively, in the fourth quarter of 2009, the sources noted.

Garmin is reportedly to begin offering a series of entry level PNDs with prices ranging from US$99-119 before the end of November 2009, the sources noted. For the fourth quarter, Garmin expects PND shipments to increase sequentially by 40-50% due to the holiday season, according to COO Cliff Pemble.

According to data compiled by Canalys, Garmin is currently the top-rank PND vendor with a global market share of 36%, followed by TomTom with 29%, Mio (including Magellan and Navman) with 11% and Nextar with 3%.
