The IEEE is expected to finalize the 802.16m standard in mid-2010, making the technology the first international 4G standard, according to sources from Taiwan's networking device industry.
However, the new standard has met with mixed feedback from WiMAX operators worldwide, said the sources, noting that US-based Clearwire has said it will not be in a rush to adopt the 802.16m standard, while Russia-based WiMAX operator Yota said that it will cooperate with Samsung Electronics to roll out 802.16m networks.
Data released by the WiMAX Forum indicates that a total of 50 companies have committed to the development of 802.16m technology.
