Saturation

Nokia camera phones are built to produce as real to life photos as possible, but they may be times when you want to add more colour into your images. By using the Saturation option in the settings, you can fill your photos with lush, vivid colours, reminiscent of a fairytale. Or, turn it right the way down to add a certain dreary look.

With the saturation set to maximum, you’re often left with less detail on the subject as the colour takes over quite a bit.

Contrast

Should you want to, you can change the contrast of a photo before you take it. This is often an operation that’s easily achievable in desktop software, however, it’s good to have the option to change it on-board.

Flicker Reduction

This will only be useful when taking photos indoors and under certain lighting conditions. This reduces the flickering of lights – between 50Hz and 60Hz – that your camera might pick up on the photo.

Resolution

If the bright sun is the centre of the screen and a person is on the right, pressing on the subjects sun-lit (but not as bright as the sun itself) face will absorb at that level – not the sun. This will give you more detail where you want it most.

Effects

Adding special effects after you’ve taken a photo is something we all do now. But you can add some effects before you’ve taken the picture, too. Admittedly, it’s not a big range of effects, but some basic ones we’re all used to: Black & White, Sepia, Negative, Solarise and Normal.

Whatever setting you’ve enabled or adjusted, don’t forget to pressSave settings to make sure your next photo uses the desired effect.

The app also makes it extremely easy for you to donate £5 directly to Oxfam through a simple SMS message.

Walk2Help

Walk2Help is a really interesting concept that allows you to make a difference without needing to hand over any cash.

The idea is that by downloading this app, it will track how far you have walked using your Lumia’s GPS functionality. The more you walk, the more points you will accumulate.

You can then donate your points towards a specific cause, for example, the building of a library or providing clothes for refugees. Once a project has collected enough points then its sponsor (a company or other benefactor) will come good on their promise.

It really is that simple. Never has taking a walk sounded like such a good idea.

GOTM

GOTM is an acronym for Give On The Mobile, a service that is dedicated to helping people donate money to charities on their phones.

This Windows Phone version is very simple to use. You search through the list of charities (there are hundreds on the list) and select the one you wish to support.

On the next screen, you choose the amount (£1, £3 or £5) and then fill in your personal details. All this information generates a text message and you just need to press send to complete the donation.

Within the app, you can select favourite charities and it remembers your last donation. You can also set up a fundraising profile if you’re trying to raise money for charity.

Just Giving

The Just Giving website is based in the UK but has an increasing international presence. It now accepts donations in all major international currencies.

Just Giving has become a popular way of donating money online and supporting your friends when they embark on sponsored pursuits, such as running marathons.

This is an unofficial app and you can’t donate money directly through it but there are still a lot of features that you may find useful. It has Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and YouTube integration for all the latest news from Just Giving.

Perhaps best of all, it pulls in informative articles from the Just Giving blog to help you with tips, such as creative fundraising ideas and helping you to secure a place on sponsored events.

SeeYourImpact

All too often giving money to charity is a rather impersonal process. You sign your cheque, put your coins in the tin or press send on your phone and that’s the end of it.

This app is an antidote to all that. You read through the stories or pick an issue that has pricked at your conscience, then select an amount that you want to donate.

A couple of weeks later you will be contacted again with photos and a report of exactly how your money has helped. More than that, it introduces you to the very person or people that has benefited from your donation.

A day in the life with my Nokia Lumia 800

My Nokia Lumia 800 is a constant companion. At various points throughout the day and night it will aid me, inform me, delight me and also connect me. In fact, I think I would be lost without it.
Whether it is through the core functions of the phone and the People Hub, the use of apps or the camera, my Lumia 800 is always there to assist me.

Even when I am not doing something productive, which is more often than I would like to admit, my smartphone is there to keep boredom at bay. Funny how time seems to fly when you’re just meddling with your phone’s settings.

It is possible – and this happens to me regularly – to lose whole afternoons going through apps in the Windows Phone Marketplace; installing them, trying them out, uninstalling them, looking for alternatives, going through the cycle again, setting up Live Tiles and so on.

Even when I am not idly wasting time (or keeping myself quietly occupied as I prefer to call it) my Nokia Lumia is a big part of my daily routine.

How so? Here’s an example of how the Nokia Lumia can help me through the day.

Morning

At 7.30, the alarm function on my Lumia 800 wakes me up. Nothing fancy, just the native Windows Phone alarm.

After washing and getting ready, I will check emails on my Lumia while having breakfast and also take a quick look around the BBC News app to see what’s happening in the world. I’ll also glance at the Live Tile on the Weather Flow app.

If I am travelling to work, I will use Nokia Transport to check that the trains and buses are running smoothly.

En route, and depending on my mood, I have a couple of options to keep myself occupied. I will either listen to music on my Lumia or use MetroPaper to read articles and web pages that I had saved for offline reading.

Day

Throughout the day and at fairly regular intervals, I can be messaging people via SMS, sending and receiving emails and checking Twitter on Rowi.

If I am walking around and see something interesting, funny or pretty, then I can take a picture with my Lumia and send it to friends using WhatsApp.

I have a terrible sense of direction, so Nokia Maps is guaranteed to be called into action at one point of another.



Afternoon

I have recently got into selling stuff on eBay (blame the recession…) so during lunch I will catch up new bids or any sales I’ve made on the excellent Windows Phone eBay app.

The whole process of buying and selling on eBay is so much easier when you have such a great app to keep you on top of things. Of course, hand in hand with eBay is the PayPal app too.

Simple Paper is an app that I will  look at once a day at least. It’s a note-taking app that syncs with Simple Note, so you can access your notes on any computer or mobile phone. I use mine for creating lists but also for storing information that I need regular and quick access to, like WiFi passwords and task reminders.

On the journey home, it’ll be another look at Nokia Transport and maybe playing a game on the train back.

Evening

How I use my Lumia in the evening will be dictated by my plans.

For example, if I’m going to the cinema, I’ll be looking at Flixster for screening times and if I’m eating out and feel like trying some place new, then Foodspotting is the app to use.

On the other hand, I’m now at the age where staying in is just as appealing as going out. Epicurious is wonderful for discovering new recipes and lets even a modest cook like me eat well at home.

A relaxing evening in front of the TV is not to be scoffed at. In this recent Conversations post we looked at how your Lumia is an ideal TV companion.

On the evenings when there are football games being played and they are not being shown on TV, then I’ll be constantly checking Soccer Livescores.

Even when there is nothing on TV, or if your other half has claimed squatting rights over it, there are still plenty of ways of keeping yourself entertained on the Lumia.

Three apps I have used to while away an evening are Crackle, BBC Podcast Lounge and PrimeTube.

Night

Just because the night is drawing in and you’re tucked up in bed doesn’t mean you have to put the Lumia away!

Ever since I was a young boy, I have listened to the radio to help me fall asleep and there are plenty of excellent Internet radio apps in the Windows Phone Marketplace. What’s great about Internet radio is that you can listen to stations from around the world.

Finally, if the radio is not working then I might give one of the sleep assistance and relaxation apps a try. There’s Relax Melodies, SleepNow, Sleep Bug and plenty more to choose from.

Of course, the only danger is that I’ll be up all night installing them, trying them out, uninstalling them…

For example, did you know the Carl Zeiss lens has a surface accuracy of 1 nanometre (they explain just how small that is), and that the polycarbonate body is made of the same material as the boards in a hockey rink (anyone watching an NHL game [well, not this season...yet] will know how much punishment they take).

Internet sharing on Nokia Lumia

In the Nokia Lumia software update delivered in June, we saw a number of improvements and added features; one of them adding Internet sharing to the phone. What is it and how does it work? We’re about to tell you.

Internet sharing, or Wi-Fi tethering as it’s often called, is a way of connecting one device to another with the purpose of accessing the Internet through that second device. This is useful if you haven’t got a great data plan but the other device does. Or if the first device has a poor signal and can’t connect to the network but the second device can. The two devices connect to each other using Wi-Fi and up to five devices (which can also include computers, not just mobiles) can be connected at any one time.

Also, it’s worth noting that in places where 4G is available, it’s often faster than conventional home broadband. This means that with Internet sharing, it’s possible to connect your home computer to your 4G device and go about your Internet business much faster than before.

If you’ve updated to the latest software on your Lumia, you should already be seeing this new feature. If you haven’t updated yet, follow the steps in the videos below. Internet sharing will also be appearing in future Lumia smartphones like the Nokia Lumia 920and Lumia 820.

Once you’ve got the latest software, here’s how you set up Internet sharing to turn your Lumia 800 or Lumia 710 into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.

Navigate to settings in the app list, and then scroll down to Internet Sharing. A simple flick of the switch turns Internet sharing On.

 

The first time that you do this, your phone will automatically be given a broadcast name. This is the name that other people will see when they’re looking for a Wi-Fi hotspot on their own device. You’ll also be given a password that people will need to input in order to connect. Pressing the setup button at the bottom allows you to change all of these details.

 

When people do connect, your phone will tell you how many people are accessing the Internet through your phone in the Guests connected section. You can’t control or see who’s connected to your Wi-Fi hotspot, although hopefully you’ll only have given the details out to people you can trust. You can change the security type to allow anybody to connect without the need for a password, but we wouldn’t recommend doing that. The last thing you want is somebody downloading high-def movies through your data plan without you knowing it.

 

If you’re worried about people abusing your data plan, don’t be. If you yourself are connected to a WiFi access point, they’re not eating into your data allowance. However, if you’re away from a WiFi access point and are still hosting a connection through your operator, you can manage your data use with Counters – the perfect companion when Internet sharing.

At any point, you can switch off Internet sharing by going back into the settings menu and flicking the switch; so you’re always in control.

In the black corner we have the iPhone 5 armed with Apple maps. And in the Cyan corner (oh yeah) we have the Nokia Lumia 900, of course sporting its muscle in the form of Nokia Maps!

Now, both applications have been put head-to-head by the man himself, Nirave on UK mobile review.

Me, myself, personally, I’m not going to sit here and chirp on about this detailed, blow by blow encounter, I’m just going to say one thing; read the post.

Amazon UK lists unlocked HTC 8X Windows Phone for £531.43

We previously covered UK retailer Unlocked Mobiles who has the HTC 8X listed for just £399. Now we've got Amazon UK who has published the product page for the recently announced Windows Phone, and the price tag is a steep one - £531.43 (SIM-free).
We're yet to see final pricing which will be available near or after Windows Phone 8 launches and the new Apollo hardware is released to consumers, but at least we can have an idea as to what we'll be looking at in the near future. The product page also states November 8, 2012 as the release date.

This is of course subject to change and nothing is concrete, so take this how you will. But a question can be put forward - what do you make of Amazon's price tag? Would you part with this much hard earned cash for the 8X? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Nokia to sue HTC over 8X Windows Phone 8 smartphone design, says its copied from our Lumia 820

There is already a patent war is going on between Apple and Samsung over the design and shape of smartphones, now we are expecting to see one more design patent war between the two leading smartphone manufacturers – Nokia and HTC.

Few days ago, HTC launched its new range of Windows Phone 8 devices named HTC 8X and 8S in a special event, featured by the presence of Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer. The new HTC 8X, with no doubt, gives resemblance to Nokia Lumia 820 in design and build at first look and this is what Nokia felt as well, after looking at the device.

Now the news is coming from one of our internal reliable source that Nokia is soon going to file a lawsuit against HTC for copying its patent design in their upcoming smartphone.

The reports are saying Nokia is preparing to get HTC 8X banned in various parts of the world from going on sale when it will launch in November. Nokia has said in reports that the front-face of HTC 8X looks identically same as of the Lumia 820 followed by side-curves of the phone body.

The spokespersons at HTC haven’t said a single word on this news till now. It is expected that both Nokia and HTC are going to launch their new range of Windows Phone 8 Smartphones in November, right after the release of Windows Phone 8 at the end of October. Nokia has already dominated the Windows Phone market since the launch of its Lumia series smartphones and to maintain its leadership in the market, it looks like Nokia is planning to follow the policy of Apple.
