Acer and Asustek Computer both plan to launch customized 3G smartphones in cooperation with China-based 3G carriers, including China Mobile and China Unicom, in 2010, according to industry sources.
Acer will initially cooperate with China Mobile and China Unicom to promote TD-SCDMA and WCDMA models, respectively, and plans to outsource the production of TD-SCDMA handsets to Foxconn International Holdings (FIH), the sources indicated.
Acer plans to launch more than eight smartphones in 2010 for markets in Europe, Asia Pacific and China, said Roger Yuan, vice president of smart handheld business unit, Acer Asia Pacific.
Asustek is expected to start marketing the Garmin-Asus dual-brand smartphones in China soon and launch customized 3G models also for China Mobile and China Unicom in 2010, the sources added.
