Taiwan handset makers to use MediaTek solutions for smartphone production

Taiwan-based handset vendors Inventec Appliances and Gigabyte Communications will adopt MediaTek's new MT6516 solution for the production of entry-level smartphones. Volume shipments are set to begin in the first quarter of 2010 targeting China and other emerging markets, according to industry sources.

The MT6516, which supports EDGE, Windows Mobile 6.5 OS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS, is likely priced below US$150 FOB (free on board), attracting handset makers in Taiwan and China to adopt the solutions, the sources added.

In addition to Inventec and Gigabyte, other handset makers, including Compal Communications, Arima Communications and Foxconn International Holdings (FIH), have also expressed interest in the MT6516, indicated the sources.

Other makers such as HTC (High Tech Computer), Acer and Asustek Computer are currently focusing on 3G and Android smartphones for the mid- to high-end segments and are unlikely to use MediaTek smartphone solutions, the sources said.
