PadFone 2 is a fully featured 4.7" Android™ smartphone with industry-leading specifications that docks with the unique PadFone 2 Station to become a lightweight, but fully featured, 10.1" tablet. Apps are seamlessly optimized on-the-fly to support both tablet and phone modes, with an instant transition between smartphone and tablet screen sizes.

ASUS PadFone 2: Behind The Scenes

ASUS' world-renowned 'Design Thinking' philosophy has significantly reduced PadFone 2 Station's thickness and weight. At just 649g, the combined weight of both PadFone 2 and PadFone 2 Station is now lighter than most tablets on the market, and the dock mechanism has been redesigned to require just one swift step to use.

PadFone 2 - two years in development, seamless one-step docking

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyXlirkRUVs Meet Padfone 2 - the latest evolution in ASUS' unique mobile phone/tablet hybrid concept

The PadFone concept has been in development for over three years now and the latest release, Padfone 2, has been in the lab for more than two years.

With PadFone 2, ASUS wanted to further improve the user experience and particularly the process of moving between Pad and Phone.

ASUS engineers worked tirelessly to reduce the weight of both PadFone 2 and the PadFone 2 Station tablet dock, looking at every part of the product with an eye on reducing weight without sacrificing robustness or quality. The result of all this hard work is that, together, the two are lighter than many 10-inch tablets on the market and the user experience hasn't been compromised in the process.

One of the key breakthroughs with PadFone 2's design is the new patent-pending docking mechanism. ASUS wanted to simplify the PadFone 2's docking process by reducing the number of steps required to dock or undock the phone.

PadFone 2 requires just a single-step insertion and removal process that, amazingly, is more secure than the original PadFone docking mechanism, which incorporated a protective hinged door. It's hard to believe that the dock is as secure as it is, but the Phone remains in place when PadFone 2 is used upside down and it'll withstand the knocks and bumps of daily use.

This was the result of over two years of extensive research and development by ASUS engineers. Many different versions of the mechanism were tested during its two and a half year development, and the result is an incredibly intuitive and refined user experience.

Docking and undocking is simple and ASUS software engineers also worked to optimize Dynamic Display technology to make the switch between Phone and Pad even more seamless. The result of this work is instantly obvious -- the transition between modes now takes just over one second and your apps are perfectly optimized for both screen sizes.

Filming and editing videos on the Nokia 808 PureView

We have spoken a lot about the Nokia 808 PureView and its world-beating photography prowess. There have been tips and tricks, camera apps, connectivity options and even why we think it’sbetter than a standalone camera.
One aspect of the 808 PureView that we haven’t touched upon in too much detail is the video recording and editing functions.
The Nokia 808 PureView is as highly advanced when it comes to moving images as it is with the still variety. It has Full HD 1080p video resolution and can capture up to 30 frames per second.
If that sounds technical, don’t worry. The 808 PureView is simple to use, while also giving you further options to be a little more creative.
Here is an introduction and basic guide for shooting and editing video on your Nokia 808 PureView.

Shooting Modes

Just as with the stills camera, there are a number of options that you can select when you are using the video camera.
Automatic is a simple point and shoot and your best bet if you are relatively inexperienced and you are happy for the 808 PureView to do all the work.
Selecting Scenes gets you more involved with the settings, but the camera is still there to assist you. Within Scenes there are several presets that you can choose so that you are always getting the best results in different conditions.
Scenes mode
The scenes are:
  • Low light
  • Night
  • Sports
  • Snow
  • Automatic
Shooting in Creative mode gives you full control over the camera’s settings and offers the most potential for you to realise your artistic vision!
Creative mode
You will notice that within the Creative settings menu, you can now change:
  • Video resolution (1080p, 720p or 360p)
  • Frame rate (30fps, 25fps, 24fps or 15fps)
  • Colour tones (normal, vivid, sepia or black and white)
  • You can also alter the saturation, contrast and sharpness
Right at the bottom of the Creative screen is a furtherpreferences menu where you can find options for the viewfinder grid, video stabilisation, the focus assist lamp and capturing when the phone is locked.
Preferences

Custom presets

Creative Mode also lets you save your the Custom presets. This gives you 3 presets where the camera will remember your preferred Creative settings. Any changes you make to any of the settings when you have selected C1, C2 or C3 will be remembered for the next time.
For example, you could have C1 where you are always shooting at maximum 1080p resolution so that it will look fantastic on your HDTV. Then on C2 you could have a lower resolution selected if you are filming a video that you will want to be able to easily email and share with friends on social networks.

Viewfinder icons

When you are ready to film you will see some icons on the left of the viewfinder screen.
At the top is the light icon, which lets you turn the video light on and off. At the bottom is the toggling of the continuous autofocus function (CAF).
Filming
In Creative mode you will have two further icons. There is theexposure compensation, which lets you manually alter, and control, the brightness of the scene. The scale goes from the brightest at +4.0 to the darkest at -4.0.
The cloud icon beneath the exposure control is the white balanceand this has several modes for you to choose from:
  • Cloudy
  • Fluorescent
  • Sunny
  • Incandescent
  • Automatic

Filming and zooming

For Automatic and Scenes mode you are pretty much ready to start filming right away. It is only in the Creative mode where you need to spend a little more time familiarising and experimenting with the options outlined above.
The actual filming is the easy bit. You can start to record by either pressing the dedicated camera button on the side of the Nokia 808 PureView or you can press the red ‘record’ on the right of the screen.
You can tap on any part of the screen to focus on an area or object but this will disable the continuous auto focus. To bring back the continuous auto focus, just tap the CAF icon in the bottom left.
Zooming
Zooming is a real delight to use. Just slide your finger up the screen around the area that you wish to zoom into. You will notice a white rectangle appear and the further you slide your finger up the screen, the smaller this rectangle will appear.
As soon as you’ve finished the sliding motion, the viewfinder will zoom in on the area within the rectangle. Give it a try and you’ll get the hang of it really quickly.
It’s not just easy to use but effective as well. Due to the revolutionary 41-megapixel sensor, you will be able to achieve 4x zoom in full HD 1080p; 6x lossless zoom for 720p video and for non-HD (640×360) video, an amazing 12x zoom!

Editing

After you’ve finished recording, you can edit the video on your 808 PureView.
When the video is ready for playback, tap anywhere on the screen (apart from the play icon in the centre) and further options appear. Select the icon furthest to the right – the three horizontal bars. This will bring up a menu where you can edit the video, send it via email, SMS or Bluetooth or share it on Facebook or YouTube.
Selecting edit takes you to the video editor, where you can trim the beginning and the end of your video.
The screen will show you two images – the start frame and the end frame. Pressing one maximises it over the other, and vice versa, but you’ll always have a glimpse of both shots.
Editing
Scrub along the blue timeline at the bottom of the screen to select the start and end frames you want. You can press play at any point to preview the new clip. When you’re happy with the result, select the tick icon on the bottom right. A new video will be saved in your library and the original file will be left intact.
So that’s a simple guide explaining the basic functions of the Nokia 808 PureView’s video camera.  This documentary, filmed entirely with an 808 PureView, shows you just what it is capable of.

Social Media Week Recap

Two weeks ago Nokia travelled around the world to take part in and sponsor Social Media Week, for the 4th time running no less!
During the week speakers from various companies, organisations and professions, came together to talk about the impact of social media, socially, commercially and economically.
The event is an open forum where people can come for free, to teach, listen and share new ideas. Nokia are proud to be a sponsor of such a collaborative event, and here’s a short video from some of the top bodies in the Nokia Social team, to tell you a little bit about why it’s special, and how it’s helping to educate people regarding social media.
If this kind of thing interests you or you have some ideas or insight to share, I definitely recommend that you get involved. It’s free to attend and runs in many different countries, and as Carla said in the video, expansion to more countries may be on the horizon soon.

Felix Baumgartner's supersonic freefall from 128k' - Mission Highlights

After flying to an altitude of 39,045 meters (128,100 feet) in a helium-filled balloon, Felix Baumgartner completed a record breaking jump for the ages from the edge of space, exactly 65 years after Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier flying in an experimental rocket-powered airplane. Felix reached a maximum of speed of 1,342.8 km/h (833mph) through the near vacuum of the stratosphere before being slowed by the atmosphere later during his 4:20 minute long freefall. The 43-year-old Austrian skydiving expert also broke two other world records (highest freefall, highest manned balloon flight), leaving the one for the longest freefall to project mentor Col. Joe Kittinger.

10 rock and roll movies every music fan will love

Everything about rock 'n' roll celebrates living life to the max. These movies show why.
If anyone lives the amazing everyday it’s rock musicians. They suck the life out of life with their electric performances, their creativity and their energy. If you can’t enjoy this buzz in reality, the next best thing is rock and roll movies. Whether raw and edgy or just rollicking good fun, here’s ten we think every music fan will love.
THE DOORS (1991) Director: Oliver Stone
Kevin Dillon lied about drumming skills at his audition and was tutored by real Doors drummer John Densmore. Val Kilmer said of Jim Morrison:  ‘Selfish thing to do to kill yourself. Maybe his music has done more good than the people he hurt.’
THE GREAT ROCK AND ROLL SWINDLE (1980) Director: Julien Temple
The nihilistic flavour of the Sex Pistols documentary can be summed up by Johnny Rotten: ‘By the time you’re 29 – you’ve got two kids and just want to commit suicide.’ He later said Sid ‘…couldn’t find his way out of a paper crisp bag. I called him Vicious after a pet hamster I once had, that had no teeth.’
SCHOOL OF ROCK (2003) Director: Richard Linklater
Writer Mike White was Jack Black’s neighbour. His story of a teacher inspiring pupils through rock attempted to capitalise on Black’s charisma. White had wanted to be a New York screenwriter but returned to LA for better weather. Truly a ‘Black and White’ production.
HIGH FIDELITY (2000) Director: Stephen Frears
Frears loved filming the record store scenes: ‘I could have done them forever.’ He left the music choices to the younger people, who argued endlessly about what should be included. He denied it was a music film: ‘It’s a film driven by dialogue and drama.’
THIS IS SPINAL TAP (1984) Director: Rob Reiner
Reiner called it a ‘Fly by the seat of our pants’ unscripted rock mockumentary. In a later ‘band’ radio interview, Spinal Tap told the presenter: ‘Originally the pyramids were square…it’s due to global warning.’ When asked ‘Who told you?’ they replied ‘Some bloke with a thing.’
GIMME SHELTER (1970) Director: Albert Maysles
Ex psychologist Maysles got more than he bargained for with this Stones’ concert documentary. ‘People! Why are we fighting?’ called Keith Richards during a raucous crowd moment. ‘Either those cats cool it, or we don’t play.’ Amongst the camera operators for film was a young George Lucas.
PURPLE RAIN (1984) Director: Albert Magnoli
Prince turned up to premieres ‘in a purple limo, smelling of lavender.’ Known for his wacky interviews, the artist now formerly known as Prince also says that he ‘lives in Minnepolis because it’s so cold it keeps the bad people out.’
WAYNE’S WORLD (1992) Director: Penelope Spheeris
Self-proclaimed ‘white trash chick’ Spheeris is a canny businesswoman. She started Rock and Reel, the first company producing music videos, long before MTV. She was also given 7% of Wayne’s World. No one thought the film would do so well. Zang!
THE LAST WALTZ (1978) Director: Martin Scorsese
In 1971 student Allan Arkush gave his professor four free tickets to The Band’s gig. Seven years later Professor Martin Scorsese made their documentary, using Art Director Boris Levin, who had worked on the decidedly unrock ‘n roll The Sound of Music.
CONTROL (2007) Director: Anton Corbijn
Actor Sam Riley, who played Joy Division’s doomed Ian Curtis in this biopic, met his wife Alexandra Maria Lara on the set. His role also prompted film critic Mark Kermode to call him ‘Actor of the year.’
Any we’ve missed off the list, which you think show how musicians treat everyday like an adventure? If so, add them to our rock and roll hall of fame in the comments below.

Xpress Web App Builder: creating Series 40 apps

Reach out to millions of Series 40 phone owners
When we announced the new Nokia Xpress Browser the other week, we saw the introduction of web apps for Series 40 – a browser-based app experience. This also opened up the possibility of people being able to create their own web apps, using the Nokia Xpress Web App Builder, to get new and exciting content onto their phones, as well as publishing them via Nokia Store.
In this article, we wanted to test out how easy it is to create an app using the Nokia Xpress Web App Builder. Fortunately, it’s very simple; even I could do it – a non-developer.
Nokia Xpress Web App Builder page
As with everything, you must first create an account, but it’s free and only takes a couple of minutes to do. Then, press the big TRY IT NOW button in the middle of the page.
But, before you do so, consider what you’ll contributing to after you create your first web app. The orange section at the bottom of the page explains:
With over 600 million phones in daily use, the Series 40 platform offers you unique access to a massive audience around the world. The Series 40 web app platform let’s you reach these users with your web assets quickly and easily without having to write native, Java-based applications.
Whatever type of app you’re creating, it must have a name. Nothing too profound, or long, but something that people will be able to remember.
Next, you’ll need to decide on the template you’re going to use. Do you want a standard, one page layout with everything on? Or multiple sections, that encourages people to explore and click to find new material? Decide here.
Once you’ve decided on the theme, the section on the right will show you the customising options. For example, if you’ve chosen the accordion theme, you’ll have to add and name to the differentfolds that will appear in your app. Folds are the sections of the app, that when clicked, open up to reveal more content.
Naming the header is also a necessity so that people will be reminded of the name of your app at the top of the page. There are also some options if you want to change the colour of the font, the colour of the background, and also the option to upload an image that you can put at the top of the app, too.
Whatever changes you make, be sure to hit the apply button and keep an eye on the preview pane on the left. It’s here that you’ll see the changes you’ve made to your soon-to-be app.
Next, you’ll need to add some content to this new app.
Nokia Asha 311 and Conversations web app_latest stories
The types of content you can add are:
  • RSS Feed – to add content from an RSS feed
  • Facebook – to add your Facebook profile and timeline
  • Twitter – to add your Twitter feed
  • YouTube – adds a preview and carousel of your videos from YouTube
  • Clip – adds clipped content from web pages to your app
  • Picasa – adds your Picasa feed, in the form of photos
  • Flickr – adds your Flickr feed, in the form of photos
  • WordPress – if you’ve got a WordPress blog, your posts will show up in your new app
  • Tumblr – adds content from your Tumblr page
  • Photos – you can add other photos from other photo sharing sites
By dragging and dropping one of these icons into the app-preview below, it will add that to you app. Once it’s included, you’ll need to add the RSS feed, profile name, or any other details you’re asked for in the properties field that will appear on the right.
Nokia Asha 311 and Conversations web app_YouTube feed
When you’re happy with the content that you’re going to bring to this app, you can enhance it further with the next step.
The enhancements you can add to your app are:
  • Maps – you can add a map of anywhere you like into your app
  • Call – depending on what type of app you’re making, people can dial a phone number (set by you) by just pressing one button
  • Ads – provided by inneractive, you can add ads to your app if you want
  • SMS – much like call, people can send a text message just by pressing one button from within the app
Now for the final stage in the app creation, naming, giving a description to the app and filling out the author information. Once you’ve done that and pressed save, you have three choices:Download package, Test the app, and Publish your app.
If you’ve developed an app before and know how to manipulate source code, downloading the app lets you make further customisations to the .wgt file. You’ll need to know your way aroundNokia Web Tools for this. You also need to download this file if you wish to publish it to Nokia Store – which we’ll cover later down the page.
Nokia Xpress Web App Builder app enhancements
It’s always best to test the app before you publish it, so click theTest the app button. Nokia Xpress Web App Builder will present you with a URL to type into the browser of your Series 40 phone for testing.
If your purpose of creating an app was for your own personal use, you can just continue to use the URL given in the step below, and your app-creation is done. Congratulations! If, however, you wanted the chance to reach out to millions of Series 40 phones owners, continue to the publishing stage.
You’ll need a publishers account to publish content to Nokia Store, and the Publish your app button will take you to the page to do that. Just enter your details, and you’re ready to go.
Download, test, or publish
At the next screen you need to tell Nokia Publish what type of app you’re going to publish. Because we’re creating a Series 40 web app, select that option. Next come the legal questions and a reminder of the content guidelines. If you don’t have the legal right to distribute the content, you can’t publish it to Nokia Store, which is why I can’t actually publish this app I’ve made – it’s an amalgamation of some of Nokia’s digital assets, that I don’t own. However, if you do, proceed.
Fill out the app name, description and all of the other pieces of information that’s asked. When it comes to setting a price for your new app, Series 40 web apps can only be distributed as free content in Nokia Store. Once you’ve completed the naming process, press create.
Next, you must upload the app that you downloaded earlier – the .wgt file – into the box at the bottom of the next page, taking time to look at and fill in any other pieces of information you’re asked. Satisfied with all that? Upload and continue.
Nokia Publish edit data
To make sure that the apps are fit for publication, you’ll be asked what sort of testing you’ve performed, and on which phones. Moving your cursor across the compatibility bars and clicking when appropriate will inform them how much testing has been performed.
Some apps won’t be appropriate for global deployment, as trends and tastes in different countries vary. Also, if your app is in a certain language, you may wish to target a particular part of the world to focus on. The next two stages will help you here.
And there you go. Your distribution proposal was successfully set and when you’re ready, push the Submit to QA button. Expect to wait a short period of time while the Nokia Publish team checks your app to make sure that it’s in full working order. Soon enough – if everything checked out – your Nokia Xpress web app will be available to download on Nokia Store and possibly in the hands of 60 million Series 40 daily users.
Are you tempted to make a web app? Have you made one usingNokia Xpress Web App Builder? Tell us about your experience in the comments below.
