Taiwan market: FET expects fast growth of online application store

Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) launched S Marketplace, its online store for handset-based applications, in October 16, 2009 and expects to reach cumulative downloads 4.66 million in 2012, according to the company.

There are about 100 Chinese-language Android-platform applications available at S Marketplace currently, and cumulative downloads stand at about 10,000, FET pointed out. More than 50% of the store's users are not FET subscribers, implying a considerably large market potential for S Marketplace, FET indicated.

Windows Mobile-based programs will be added to the store beginning in June 2010, FET pointed out. In addition, English versions of some programs will also become available in 2010, mainly for use by subscribers under the (Asia-Pacific) Conexus Mobile Alliance, the company noted.

Of the global users of Android-platform handsets, 15% have visited online applications stores, FET cited statistics as saying. Among the users, 15% have downloaded paid-for programs. Users download 5.4 programs at US$1.60 each on average, FET indicated. The global sales value of Android-platform applications is projected to grow from US$12.9 million in 2009 to US$27.2 million in 2010 and US$216.9 million in 2014, FET noted.
