SAMSUNG Launches Its Third Annual Solve for Tomorrow, the $1 Million* STEM Education Contest for Middle and High School Students

Samsung and its partners invited public school teachers and students across the United States to participate in the Solve for Tomorrow contest. The winning teachers and students will receive products, software, and programming from Samsung Hope for Children, the Adobe Foundation, and DIRECTV for their schools - a total retail prize value of more than $1 million.

“Our goal is to raise awareness and interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) while providing teachers and students with the resources they need for success,” said David Steel, Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy for Samsung Electronics North America.

As a company committed to raising enthusiasm for STEM and addressing the technology gap in classrooms, Samsung created Solve for Tomorrow in 2010 to promote STEM education as a way to foster sustainable innovation and an environmentally-aware society. [Update: Not Just Samsung] Exploit Could Force Factory Reset On Many Android Phones

Update: This issue is, unsurprisingly, a lot more nuanced than the video here lets on. The bug is based in the stock Android browser, is in fact quite old, and has been patched in more recent builds of Android - this is probably why Nexus devices running the most recent OTAs are unaffected. The fact is, this is not a Samsung problem, it's an old Android problem that has been known about for some time. More recent versions of Android avoid the wipe issue, but unpatched devices (like some Samsung phones) may still be vulnerable.
Ouch. This is not the type of PR Samsung needs right now. Apparently a new vulnerability has been found that can force a factory reset with zero user interaction on many Samsung phones running TouchWiz. The bug is found within the stock TW browser, which allows direct execution of dialer codes like the one used for this exploit. This code is easily embedded into HTML, so one tap of a malicious link will reset the phone instantly. Other browsers, like Chrome, Dolphin, etc. aren't affected, so we highly recommend switching if you've been using the stock TouchWiz browser.
At this time it's unclear exactly how many Samsung phones are affected, but so far users have been able to reproduce the issue on the Galaxy S II (assume all variants), the Galaxy S Advance, Galaxy Beam, and Galaxy Ace, among others. From what we're hearing, the international GSIII variant should be unaffected, and the AT&T version was updated with a patch for this very exploit last week. It's unknown at this time whether or not the Sprint, Verizon, and T-Mobile variants are susceptible.

Samsung Announces Pink Galaxy S III for South Korea

As expected, Samsung has announced the pink colored Galaxy S III for its home market. Targeted at ladies, Samsung will sell the 32GB Galaxy S III in Martian Pink in South Korea in limited numbers.

There’s no word if the new color will be available in the international market but Samsung already sells its number one smartphone in six different colors.

Introduction
The iPhone 5 has been the most anticipated mobile device of 2012 together with its cousin the iPad Mini, which we expect to be seeing shortly. Apple has made displays their most prominent marketing feature because it determines the quality of the visual experience for everything on a Smartphone or Tablet – including Apps, web content, photos, videos, and its camera. The Retina Displays on the iPhone 4 and the new iPad were significant advancements – not just in sharpness but in picture quality and color accuracy, which is what provides the display’s real Wow factor.

So how good is the display on the iPhone 5? There has been an incredible increase in competition since the introduction of the iPhone 4 in 2010: displays have gotten a lot bigger (possibly too big), more manufacturers are using similar high-end IPS LCDs like Apple, and many Smartphones are using the latest OLED displays manufactured by Samsung – with the Samsung Galaxy S III as the premier Flagship product.

Samsung Galaxy S III Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Update Starts Hitting Europe — “Gradually” Heading To Other Markets

Samsung has begun rolling out Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) to its Galaxy S III smartphone in Europe — which could mean the handset is the first non-Nexus Android phone to get updated to Android 4.1.

Galaxy S III owners in Poland are first in the queue for the Jelly Bean update which began rolling out there today. Samsung confirmed the update in a statement, adding that it will be “gradually introduced to other markets” — with no further details on specific markets and timeframes.

“The availability and schedule of the software upgrade will vary by market and wireless carriers’ requirements,” the statement adds — a stock warning to expect some carrier foot-dragging.  The Google-branded Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus S were due Jelly Bean updates in mid-July, along with the Motorola Xoom and Nexus 7 tablets — although that mid-July timeframe hasn’t always been stuck to. For instance Engadget just reported it took until two days ago for the Verizon-branded Galaxy Nexus to finally get its payload of Jelly Beans.

The Android 4.1 update brings a raft of improvements and new features to the S III, including real-time reminders and recommendations from Google Now, plus speed and responsiveness boosts thanks to OS additions such as triple buffering in the graphics pipeline, and enforced consistent frame-rate for all drawing and animations. Android 4.1 also makes educated guesses about where your fingers are heading as you swipe and flick the screen to improve responsiveness.

In addition to the changes wrought by Android 4.1, Samsung is updating some of its software on the S III — including adding the ability to resize the Pop Up Play video window. Here’s the full list of new Samsung software features:

With the Easy Mode, users can find 5 large Easy widgets on the home screen which allow quick and easy access to the frequently used applications. The Easy widgets include both 4×2 and 4×4 arrangements of Favorite contacts, Favorite apps, Favorite settings, and Clock and Alarm.
Blocking Mode adds extra convenience, enabling users to block incoming calls, notifications, alarms and LED indicators for a designated period of time.
A pause function is added to the camera, so users can record a continuous video while only capturing the moments they want; just like on a video camera, the recording can easily be stopped and resumed.
Users now can place the upgraded ‘Pop up play’ to watch a video anywhere on the phone’s screen while running other apps, and can change the size of the player window.
Samsung is already lining up a new Android 4.1 device coming to Europe in October, and the U.S. in November — the Galaxy Note II — so it makes sense for the company to get Jelly Bean onto its other flagship handset, the S III, without serious delay. The Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) update to Samsung’s 2011 flagship phone, the Galaxy S II, took months to arrive so it’s also likely Samsung is keen for the update process to run more smoothly this time around.

Dirty use of USSD Codes in Cellular Network

USSD stands for Unstructured Supplementary Service Data and is a session based GSM protocol unlike SMS or MMS. Typically it is used to send messages between a mobile phone and an application server in the network. Nowadays there are multiple services based on USSD, such as mobile banking, social networking (facebook, twitter), updating mobile software over-the-air, prepaid recharge/account balance info etc.
In this talk, I will discuss how to play with USSD codes using different tools and exploit different services based on it. In addition, critical security issues in USSD based services such as virtual money transfer/mobile banking and social networking will be discussed. At last, I would discuss what exactly does 'dirty use of' means.
